WELCOME TO ASSM 2012

According to European Commission Environment the progressive implementation of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC in all Member States is increasing the quantities of sewage sludge requiring disposal. From an annual production of some 5.5 million tons of dry matter in 1992, the Community (EU27) is heading towards nearly 10.13 million tons. In Poland the sludge dumping at landfills will be after 2013 practically eliminated, so the debate on sludge recycling and disposal has recently been the target of growing interest. Traditional options, such as land spreading for agricultural purposes, are progressively restricted, the development of innovative systems to maximize the recovery of useful materials and/or energy is required. So work on effective strategy of sustainable management of sewage sludge focused on integrated approach, toward maximizing the energy and matter recovery, and the development of systems appropriate to local circumstances is required.

The Conference on Sewage Sludge (and other waste) Management is organised every two years by the Institute of Environmental Engineering in collaboration with other renown institutions. Now we would like strongly invite the scientists and practitioners (representing the industry and governmental organisations) from different countries and with different experiences to present the better practice and safer solutions in sewage sludge treatment and disposal. The conference will provide a forum for the discussion of the most advanced research and applications in this field.
The ASSM2012 Conference will be held December 3-5, 2012 at the Szczyrk, a beautiful place at Beskid Mountains.

The conference give us the opportunity to honor and celebrate the career of Professor January B. Bień, the Head of the Institute of Environmental Engineering, ex-rector of Czestochowa University of Technology, the member of Comitee of Environmental Engineering Polish Academy of Sciences. He is one of the leading experts in Poland on sludge treatment, management and policy related issues.
